\nOn 29 June 2018, Maat for Peace<\/span>, Development and Human Rights held a seminar at United Nations Headquarters in Geneva on the<\/span> sidelines of the<\/span> 38th Session of the<\/span> Human Rights Council entitled “Strengthening African Mechanisms for Protecting Human Rights”, with the<\/span> participation of a wide range of African and international<\/span> experts.<\/span>
\nSpeaking at the<\/span> seminar, Ayman Okeil, the<\/span> Coordinator of the<\/span> International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> for Peace<\/span> and Development,General Director of the<\/span> Maat Mr.Andrius Becys, member and advisor to the<\/span> International<\/span>Alliance<\/span> and Director of  Kulturos centras “In Actio” in Lithuania, Dr. Abozer Elmana, chairman of the<\/span> Political Affairs Committee of the<\/span> Economic and Social Council of the<\/span>  African Union , Ms. Hanaa Nejjar, member ofthe<\/span> International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> and President of Association<\/span> Femmes des deux rives in Morocco.
\nAyman Okeil stated that June is definitely the<\/span> month of Human Rights in the<\/span> African continent based on adopting the<\/span> African Charter and a number of complementary agreements. That\u2019s why Maat and the<\/span>International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> were keen to implement this activity which discussed the<\/span> development of African mechanisms for protecting human rights. Okeil also emphasized on Maat’s interest in the<\/span> African fields of human rights and development through its chairmanship of the<\/span> NGO Major Group for Africa affiliated to the<\/span>United Nations High Level Policy Forum on Sustainable Development and through its contribution to supportthe<\/span> sustainable development agenda in Africa 2063.
\nOkeil pointed out  the<\/span> challenges facing the<\/span> world in general, and the<\/span> African continent in particular, and said that it enforces on all of us to have a critical vision of the<\/span> current human rights system in Africa, to look at the<\/span>obstacles and problems and seek solutions to them, and to assist  different mechanisms of the<\/span> African Union in developing the<\/span> human rights system.<\/span>
\nOkeil presented the<\/span> recommendations of the<\/span> working paper prepared by the<\/span> Foundation. The<\/span> most important of which was the<\/span> need to amend some articles of the<\/span> African Charter in relation to some issues related to personal rights such as forced labor, protecting the<\/span> individual’s Right to Privacy and the<\/span> importance financial support of the<\/span> Commission on Human and Peoples’ by providing an<\/span> independent budget.<\/span>
\nMr. Andreas Becys, member and consultant of the<\/span> International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> and Director of the<\/span> Kulturos centras “In Actio” in Lithuania, stressed in his speech on the<\/span> openness of the<\/span> International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> for Peace<\/span> and Development to all regional organizations, especially the<\/span> African Union. He pointed out that the<\/span> Alliance<\/span>‘s interest in Africa comes in the<\/span> context of its support for development plans, visions. Also to  positively intervene in the<\/span> prevention and resolution of conflicts , the<\/span> consolidation of  culture of peace<\/span> and dialogue ,and the<\/span> cooperation between the<\/span> various regional groups. He noted that the<\/span> Alliance<\/span>  is preparing an<\/span>ambitious agenda at the<\/span> international<\/span> level during the<\/span> next phase which will target communication with governments and  active civil forces and the<\/span> legislative bodies of Europe, Africa and the<\/span> Arab region, Thus , promoting improving policies related to peacemaking and sustainable development.<\/span>
\nDr. Abozer Elmana , Chairman of the<\/span> Political Affairs Committee of the<\/span> Economic and Social Council of the<\/span>African Union, spoke about the<\/span> role of the<\/span> Economic and Social Council as the<\/span> collective framework for African civil society organizations and welcomed the<\/span> existing cooperation opportunities that are being discussed by the<\/span> Council on the<\/span> one hand and the<\/span> International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> for Peace<\/span> and Development on the<\/span>other. And declared his support for all efforts aimed at developing the<\/span> African Union’s human rights mechanisms and enhancing its role in serving the<\/span> rights of the<\/span> people of the<\/span> African continent and helping its governments to adopt responsive approaches to human rights and the<\/span> goals of sustainable development.<\/span>
\nIt should be noted that Maat and the<\/span> International<\/span> Alliance<\/span> for Peace<\/span> and Development are participating in the <\/span>38th Session of the<\/span> Human Rights Council in Geneva by providing a number of interventions in official sessions, holding parallel events and in-depth interviews with a large number of international<\/span> experts and missions of Member States of the<\/span> Council.<\/div>\n
