In conjunction with World Humanitarian Day, August 19, the International Alliance for Peace and Development praises the role of aid workers, who take risks in the field of humanitarian services. Every year, disasters cause immense suffering for millions of people – usually the world’s poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable individuals. Humanitarian aid workers strive to provide lifesaving assistance and long-term rehabilitation to disaster-affected communities, regardless of where they are in the world and without discrimination based on nationality, social group, religion, sex, race.
The United Nations has designated August 19 as the International Humanitarian Day, coinciding with the date of a terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad on August 19, 2003, which killed 22 people. Five years later, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to adopt August 19 as World Humanitarian Day
Women make up a large number of those who risk their own lives to save others, Women are often the first to respond to assistance. The International Alliance pays tribute to the efforts of women who have treated war-wounded people in Afghanistan, helped alleviate food insecurity in the Sahel and helped those who lost their homes and livelihoods in many places around the world, such as the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen and others.
The International Alliance recommends that world leaders and international actors must ensure that all humanitarian workers are protected under international law, and the Alliance also stresses the need to draw attention to humanitarian needs around the world and the importance of international cooperation.
